Cyclone causes cannery shutdown in American Samoa

4:29 pm on 26 January 2011

The StarKist Samoa tuna cannery is expected to be shutdown for up to one week because of damage caused to its plant at Satala by Cyclone Wilma.

Cannery spokesperson, Mary Sestric, says they're thankful that Cyclone Wilma did not cause injuries to employees and their families.

But she says there was damage to roof panels and the cannery's emergency response plan has been activated to assess and repair the damage.

She estimates that the plant will be down for up to a week.
