The electoral commissioner in Papua New Guinea, Andrew Trawen, says he's getting good responses from the government after calls for major reforms to the electoral process.
A paper compiled by the National Research Institute outlined a series of measures to improve the sustainability of elections.
Mr Trawen says they have a long way to go to get to an acceptable standard in place for the elections in 2012 but he is committed to meeting the recommendations, and while the government rebuffed their approaches last year, they seem more receptive now.
"This year I have gone back to them and indicated to them that we need to improve the roll and the responses that I am getting, the messages I am getting from people is that the government is ready to help us and we are also ready to start next year. So we have put in place already a proposal to the government and it's now with them to seriously look at what we ask for."
