Tuvalu reports smooth voting

3:17 pm on 16 September 2010

Voting in today's general election in Tuvalu has run smoothly, with no reported problems.

26 candidates, including all the sitting MPs, are contesting the poll, for 15 seats.

A reporter for Radio Tuvalu, Semi Malaki, says most polling stations were full this morning.

"So far since this morning, the polling stations have been packed and this afternoon, you can see that not many people are coming around to cast their votes, so I guess that most people have cast their vote already. In the outer islands, they say that a big turnout has cast their votes this morning."

Semi Malaki says an alcohol ban on the outer islands has contributed to the calm.

The results of the election are due to be out this evening.
