American Samoa Constitutional Convention delayed

8:36 pm on 20 October 2009

The Governor of American Samoa has postponed a Constitutional Convention because of the ongoing tsunami recovery effort.

Governor Togiola Tulafono said he had planned to call the convention next month to review the local constitution and American Samoa's current political status.

But he says things have changed since the tsunami disaster caused so much damage to the territory.

The Governor says a meeting with Fono and local leaders to discuss the convention last week, recommended it be postponed until June next year.

He says this will enable law makers to debate any recommendation made by the public during the next session of the Fono which starts in July.

If the Fono agrees, such matters can then be placed on the ballot in the November general election.
