A number of employees at Samoa's biggest private sector employer, Yazaki, are opting for redundancy packages because they want to hold on to cash.
The general manager for Research and Development at Yazaki, Funefeai Oliver Vaai, told the Samoa Observer that last week 19 people opted to be made redundant, receiving 2 months pay.
At one stage the company employed 2,000 people.
Now the workforce has dwindled to 695 workers as a result of the worldwide recession which has lowered the demand for the vehicle parts that Yazaki makes.
Funefeai says a lot of people just left on their own.
For employees who were made redundant, Funefe'ai says Yazaki is helping them secure other jobs.
Yazaki Samoa expects that production levels will be restored allowing the company to begin rehiring in March when Toyota begins making an upgraded model.
