Papua new Guinea's Prime Minister says his country's initiatives on climate change are gaining support in Europe.
Sir Michael Somare has just returned home from a ten-day trip to Europe where he drew attention to PNG and other forest nations' initiatives to combat climate change while pursuing 'clean' economic growth.
In Austria, Sir Michael presented the European Forum with initiatives for developed countries to cooperate with developing countries to reduce carbon emissions while still allowing sustainable development to take place.
Sir Michael says small island nations of the Pacific are looking to the United Nations and governments of developed countries to assist them with funding for adaptation to climate change.
But he says PNG is calling on developed countries to allow developing countries to contribute towards reducing the effects of climate change with their own voluntary measures.
He says PNG and 45 other forest nations don't want a 'one-size-fits-all' approach that the West is proposing to developing nations on reducing levels of carbon emission.
