Samoa umbrella group for NGOs says ban not answer to preventing violence

The Samoa umbrella group for NGOs, SUNGO, says a ban on sports activities for all high schools and colleges is not the answer to preventing violence.

The Samoa government put a ban on all college and high school sports competitions after a violent brawl left one female student suffering severe burns from a petrol bomb, and several others injured.

Three male students from the Don Bosco technical school are facing attempted murder charges.

The principal of Don Bosco, says the ban is probably the right decision for now.

But the CEO for the Samoa Umbrella for Non Governmental Organisation's, Roina Vavatau, says banning sports won't solve the problem.

"It's programmes that need to be in place and not banning sports. Because it could result to other issues and they still would come out with violent behaviours. These students need cultural counselling, they need to look at the set-up of their families and nurture behaviours, their children's attitudes and bahaviours."

However, Roina Vavatau says the government's decision to commission a study into the cause of the violence is a step in the right decision.
