Nine jail breakers remain on the run in Vanuatu

8:11 pm on 10 March 2008

The director of Vanuatu's Correctional Services says eleven of the 20 prisoners who escaped from the country's main prison on Friday are back behind bars.

Michael Taun says Correctional Services staff, police, local media and community leaders are all working together to get the nine remaining escaped inmates returned to the facility.

Mr Tuan has confirmed that the inmates were allowed to walk free on Friday afternoon when a Corrections Administrator mistakenly opened the gate of the facility.

He says those inmates still on the loose include Jacky Saul, the prime suspect in the killing of Australian woman, Lindall Jacques', in January.

"We've had a number of concerns raised from the outside about Jacky Saul. We're working at the moment closely with the community leaders of his village, including his father, trying to get him back."

Michael Taun says Correctional Services plan to tighten security at the prison following the incident.
