A Sydney man has been sentenced to two years in jail for a brutal attack on his young Cook Islands employee.
Manuel Purauto was sentenced by a Sydney court for hitting employee, Samuel Kautai, in the face with a hammer in a December 2005 attack in which he broke his jaw and blinded him in one eye.
Magistrate Hugh Dillon told the court it was not the first time Purauto had hit an employee and described the attack as part of a campaign of discipline against his young workers.
Mr Dillon says Purauto has little to no prospect of rehabilitation and continues to deny responsibility for the crime.
