Fiji police to probe alleged police beating of plot suspect Khan

2:31 pm on 21 November 2007

Fiji police say they'll investigate allegations that officers beat a New Zealand man, leaving him with a fractured skull and left cheek.

Ballu Khan was arrested in relation to an alleged assassination plot on Fiji's Prime Minister.

He's now in hospital, too ill to continue with police questioning.

A spokesperson for Fiji's Police Commissioner has confirmed police have received a complaint about Mr Khan's treatment.

He says the matter has been referred to internal investigations, but he's unsure when an investigation will begin.

Meanwhile, an application for habeas corpus, which asked to have Mr Khan charged or released, is expected to be withdrawn by his lawyers today.
