New Zealand developer ,Tim Tepaki, has announced building of a private hospital on Rarotonga at a cost of nearly 5 million US dollars , to complement Cook Islands hotels he plans to build.

The Cook Islands Times newspaper said medical practitioner and former Cook Islands Prime Minister Dr Robert Woonton will head the hospital.

He told the newspaper that a site at Tupapa, near the main town, Avarua, has been selected and negotiations begun with the landowners.

Mr Tepaki says the first two phases are planned to have at least 10 beds, x-ray facilities, an operating theatre and a testing laboratory.

He says the private hospital will complement proposed hotel developments, providing facilities for both tourists and locals.
