Fiji's former speaker of Parliament dies

9:55 am on 26 September 2006

A former Fiji Speaker of parliament, attorney general, cabinet minister and prominent lawyer, Sir Vijay R Singh, has died at the age of 75 after a long battle with cancer.

Sir Vijay had been living in Brisbane for a few years because he needed medical treatment not available in Fiji.

A report in the Fiji Times quotes his son, Vinay, as saying Sir Vijay died saying, "I love Fiji. There is no other country like it."

Always a brilliant speaker and writer, Sir Vijay's book of his thoughts on Fiji between 1995 and 2005, SPEAKING OUT, created a furore among Methodists and nationalists who wanted it banned.

The vice president, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, launched the book last month.
