Niue premier confident about future budget management

Niue's Premier, Young Vivian, says he is confident that new oversight measures on government spending will ensure that departments stay within their budgets.

The country has passed a balanced budget for the first time in years, mainly through cutting the money allocated for salaries by ten percent.

Mr Vivian says departments tend to overbudget for salaries and it is from this that the savings will be made, rather than through job losses or reduction in wages.

He also says on a quarterly basis the Public Expenditure Committee will now review each department's spending based on Treasury reports.

Mr Vivian says he wants to ensure more accountability of spending.

"Much more policing, much more transparency and much more accountability."
