Close race in American Samoa for key positions

2:08 pm on 31 December 2004

A close race appears to be developing in American Samoa for the positions of Senate President and House Speaker.

The 29th Legislature takes office on Monday, and the first order of business after the swearing-in of members is the election of the Fono leaders and officers.

In the Senate, the two frontrunners, who appear to be running neck-and-neck for the presidency, are Senator Tuaolo Manaia Fruean and Manu'a senator Lolo Letalu Moliga.

Tualolo is currently Senate President Pro temp and will be serving his second term as Senator of Mauputasi.

Lolo, now the Chief procurement Officer, is a first-term senator but has been a member of the House of Representatives for more than a decade.

And Speaker Matagi Ray McMoore appears set to face a challenge for the Speaker's seat from one of his strongest supporters, Representative Fonoti Savali Vaeao.
