NZ foreign minister hopes for calm in French Polynesia

The New Zealand foreign minister, Phil Goff, says he hopes the situation in French Polynesia will remain stable following the surprise losses of the ruling party at last week's election.

Mr Goff says this is necessary for key industries such as tourism.

"It's still not clear how that situation will shake down but we hope that as in any democracy that that transition can be managed without any violence and without excessive tensions that would be damaging to people and to the medium term outlook for French Polynesia."
