Vanuatu judges approve dissolution of parliament

10:25 am on 14 May 2004

The Supreme Court in Vanuatu has ruled in favour of the acting president, Roger Abiut, saying he was in his rights to order a dissolution of parliament.

The Court was asked to make a judgment, after Opposition MPs complained Mr Abiut didn't have the right to order such a move.

The Opposition was preparing to move a motion of no-confidence in the government, before Parliament was dissolved.

However our correspondent, Kal Moli, says the matter may still not be over.

"What we're seeing is an apparent official dissolution of parliament, of Vanuatu's fifth parliament, and the possible calling of a general election within not less than thirty days and not more than sixty days, which will give us a framework of three months."

And then on top of that, we are also, anticipating also after tonight's ruling, that when both parties get the official ruling in black and white, a possible urging of an appeal would be made, which will then send a new twist to the whole saga.
