Niue confident of massive aid commitment

The Premier of Niue Young Vivian says he is confident that aid donors will come up with most of the 25 million US dollars asked for in the island's Cyclone Heta recovery plan.

Niue's leaders are meeting with aid donors in Wellington this week to present the plan which outlines how they want to restore the island.

Mr Vivian says the plan has been well received and he thinks they will give close to the amount of money required.

He says already today New Zealand has promised 3.5 million US dollars to establish the island's trust fund and another 1.26 million in aid funding to be paid in July.

"And that is a great help for a small country and that all adds up. To some of the things that these donor agencies or countries are giving, they are very, very important so at the end of the day we'll be fairly close to it."
