PNG MPs call for death penalty

8:17 am on 18 September 2003

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister and Justice Minister have been urged to enforce the death penalty by 2004.

The call was made during a grievance debate in parliament following Kairuku Hiri MP Sir Moi Avei's outrage over the murder and mutilation of a young mother in Port Moresby last month.

Sir Moi says the city has become a home to ethnic clashes and senseless killings.

He says the government has to do something to deter people from killing.

His sentiments were echoed by a host of other politicians, including Morobe Governor Luther Wenge who said the death penalty is one of the most effective ways of deterring murderers.

Mr Wenge said the death penalty is already in place but the government needs to enforce it immediately
