A Fiji government senator has called for the local manufacture of guns and production of bibles, both for export.

The Daily Post reports that Senator Mitieli Bulanauca made the call in the Upper House during debate on the Arms and Ammunition Bill.

He said Fiji should manufacture firearms for international trade as a way of boosting the economy, adding that guns do not kill but people do.

Senator Bulanauca also says the government should use its resources to produce more Bibles for export to countries such as China, the United States, Vanuatu and Tonga.

He says the Bibles would also provide spiritual security for the people of Fiji.
