The head of the Fiji Citizen's Freedom Movement, James Bachu, has begun a hunger strike in protest at the forced eviction of cane farmers after their leases had expired.
Earlier this week, farmers in Lautoka were evicted by villagers armed with cane knives.
Mr Bachu says the so-called landowners that removed the farmers were inhuman and he says the cane growers have also been forced to pay a toll to use a public road.
He says he will remain on his hunger strike until the villagers are taken into custody and dealt with through the court system.
Mr Bachu says the government needs to act quickly to address the concerns of his organisation and those of the people of Fiji.
"Government actions will show the public that they are taking human rights seriously and also take away the suspicion that the people have against the government and who feel they are protecting the criminal elements."
