(10) A New World Order?

Whether you feel optimistic about the future of music depends to a large degree on whether you like pigeonholes. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was possible to discern perhaps half a dozen broad streams of musical endeavour. But each of those streams has since produced so many tributaries that it becomes increasingly hard to identify trends. As the composer Judith Weir recently observed, it is even difficult these days to talk about more than an individual piece, because composers themselves keep changing their styles. The absence of a mainstream is potentially very liberating for good composers, but dangerous for those who would prefer to hide behind a stylistic 'ism'. The only 'ism' mentioned much today is post-modernism, and you can't hide behind that because it's transparent. Music by Judith Weir, Sofia Gubaidulina, Elena Kats-Chernin, Roger Smalley, Henryk Górecki, David Lumsdaine, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Brian Ferneyhough, Liza Lim, Tan Dun, Reza Vali, John Adams, György Ligeti, Kaija Saariaho, Olivier Messiaen, Bent Sørensen and Michael Tippett (ABC Classic FM)
