The Critic's Chair Great Artists: Glenn Gould
With host Roger Smith

gould thumbRoger Smith looks at the recorded legacy of Glenn Gould, the Canadian musical genius who was born 80 years ago on the 25th of September, 1932, and who died 30 years ago the 4th of October, 1982.  Gould’s recordings have never been out of the catalogue since his famous 1955 interpretation of the Bach Goldberg Variations.  Largely on the strength of this Columbia Records album, Bach entered the popular culture of the time, and Glenn Gould joined Marlon Brando and James Dean as the latest Angry Young Man on the block. Roger compares three Gould recordings of Goldberg Variations, as well as his interpretations of the music of other composers.  The programme also explores the work of Glenn Gould the radio documentary-maker, and asks what all these recordings tell us about the man himself.
