Glen Downie writes of this new work:

"In the beginning of Rivet is the obsession of the hammer. The piano is hammering away in a range where the thud of the mechanism becomes particularly apparent, and the winds' repetitive articulation mimics that.

"The fast flurry of notes is inspired by the dulcimer, with the shimmer of all the high resonances being mimcked by the winds and the piano in their extreme registers.

"Rivet is both highly mechanical (as the name implies) but also evokes the spontaneity and excitement of much folk music, with the speed and virtuosity making apparent the humanity and craft of music-making."
