Gillian Whitehead wrote ...the improbable ordered dance... in 2000 for the Auckland Philharmonia, when she was their Composer-in-Residence.

The title comes from an essay called The Music of this Sphere by Dr Lewis Thomas who wondered what we might hear if we could experience the whole range of sound created by living things – most of which we are unable to hear.

The piece grows from a quiet beginning to a section suggesting birdsong which then leads into a chorale. These ideas evolve and develop around the central energetic dance-like section before the piece returns to silence.
