Gillian Whitehead wrote Venetian Mornings as a remembrance of a time in the 1960s when she met a dear friend for the first time.

They both attended a performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’ group, The Pierrot Players. It was a very humid evening and continuous distant rumblings of thunder as they went into the concert hall led eventually to a huge storm.

As they left the hall, they discovered Venice had been cut off from the world; a tornado had come out of the sea, overturned a ferry and destroyed a camping ground. A number of people had been killed.

In the following days, the two new friends met for breakfast each morning.
