Rimmer composed this piece in 1974 in response to a request from Roger Buckton, the director of the College Consort of recorders at North Shore Teachers’ College. Buckton wanted a piece that would explore new sounds for the recorder, including rapid tonguing, flutter tonguing, and multiphonics.

Roger Buckton travelled from his current home in Christchurch specially to take part in this performance … the work’s second, 45 years after the premiere. John Rimmer said at the concert that he had never expected to hear the work again.

The eight performers – six recorder players, playing six different sorts of recorder, and two percussionists – are seated in a circle facing inwards towards each other.

They are: Ben Hoadley (sopranino recorder), Jessica Shaw (soprano recorder), Roger Buckton (alto recorder), Andrew Uren (tenor recorder), Imogen Morris (bass recorder, Kevin Kim (contra bass recorder), Jeff Thomson, Cameron Shaw (percussion)

Recorded in University of Auckland Music Theatre, 26 May 2019
Producer: Tim Dodd; Recording Engineer: Adrian Hollay
