French composer Gabriel Fauré enjoyed a long and successful career as an organist, music critic, director of the Paris Conservatoire and teacher of, among others, Maurice Ravel, Georges Enesco and Nadia Boulanger.

His Piano Quartet No 1 was written over a period of three years (1876-79) and dedicated to Belgian violinist Hubert Léonard.

"Fauré's innovative use of harmony and texture results in the most exquisitely beautiful music, of which this is one of his most delicious examples," says today's pianist Diedre Irons.
