George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was 22-years-old when he wrote his exuberant choral work Dixit Dominus.

He was living in Rome writing sacred music after a temporary ban on opera in the Papal States forced him from Florence.

Anna van der Leij, Anna Sedcole (sopranos), Andrea Cochrane (alto), John Beaglehole (tenor), Matthew Painter (bass), The Tudor Consort, Chiesa Ensemble directed by Michael Stewart.

Dixit Dominus is a virtuosic tour-de-force with many difficult florid passages and a consistently high setting - Roman choirs of the day must have been full of very capable singers.

Recorded 1 September 2018 at St Mary of the Angels, Wellington by RNZ Concert.
