Performed by the Auckland Chamber Orchestra conducted by Peter Scholes at its concert in the Raye Freedman Arts Centre, Auckland, 29 April 2018.

These two pieces are orchestrations, without voice, of songs that Grieg wrote, setting poems by his Norwegian countryman Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. And the word ‘elegiac’ gives the clue to their general sentiment.

The first is based on the song “The Wounded Heart” and the second on “The Last Spring.” In the text for this one, a beautiful pastoral spring scene is described, but the writer senses that he’s seeing it for the last time.

Recorded: Raye Freedman Arts Centre, Epsom Girls Grammar School, 29 April 2018
