Religious groups unite against birth control rule

12:07 pm on 17 February 2012

Religious leaders in the United States have formed an alliance against a ruling by President Barack Obama aimed at ensuring women have access through their employers to birth control.

The rule was announced on 20 January. Mr Obama backed down a little last week, saying religious organisations opposed to the plan would not have to pay for making contraception available.

But the ABC reports that is not enough for a number of religious groups and the issue could stay alive in the 2012 presidential election.

The revised approach puts the burden on insurance companies.
