French president calls Israeli PM a liar at G20 summit

Details have emerged of a private conversation in which French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a liar.

The French leader was speaking with US President Barack Obama at the G20 summit in France last week.

The BBC's correspondent in Paris says the comments were overheard by journalists.

Mr Sarkozy said about Mr Netanyahu: "I can't look at him anymore, he's a liar."

Mr Obama replied: "You may be sick of him but I have to deal with him every day."

There had been a media silence over the remarks for several days, but they have now been published on French news website Arret sur Images and confirmed by other reporters who covered the summit.

Israeli newspapers have also reported the exchange in full.
