NATO has confirmed that an American soldier mistakenly killed an Afghan journalist working for the BBC in July.

Ahmed Omed Khpulwak, 25, was shot dead after he was mistaken for an insurgent shortly after a suicide bombing. He was one of 19 people killed in the town of Tarin Kowt in southern Uruzgan province.

An ISAF report said troops were attempting to clear a building after two suicide bombers had detonated their devices when they noticed a man ''with something clinched in one of his fists and reaching for something on his person with his other hand''.

The BBC says Mr Khpulwak had taken refuge in a bathroom and what he was holding up may have been his press card.

ISAF said Mr Khpulwak's death was tragic and has expressed condolences to his family.

Mr Khpulwak, who also worked for the Pajwak Afghan news agency, joined the BBC in 2008.
