Mugabe calls for Zimbabwe elections in 2012

Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe, says the country will hold a general election by March next year.

Elections are due in 2013 but Mugabe says the unity government he was forced into two years ago with his rival, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, has run its course.

The coalition government in Zimbabwe has been attempting to agree on key reforms before voting takes place.

There have been calls for reforms to be made so the security forces cannot intervene in the election but Mr Mugabe has ruled out any changes.
