New session of parliament halted by anti-corruption slogans

10:41 am on 2 August 2011

A new session of the Indian parliament in Delhi was shut down within hours of opening on Monday when opposition politicians shouted anti-corruption slogans.

The BBC reports corruption and rising food prices are expected to dominate the monsoon session.

Opposition parties have said inflation will be another key topic.

The government has said it is ready to discuss corruption.

But correspondents say the shutdown is a sign that little progress is likely to be made in passing reforms to accelerate growth in the economy.

Before Parliament began, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he hoped the session would be "constructive and productive".

''We are not afraid of discussing issues of corruption. The opposition also has too many skeletons in its cupboard.

''We are not afraid of discussing any issue,'' he told reporters on Sunday.

The BBC reports the government has been on the back foot for months with serious accusations of graft.
