Solo sailor rescued

A solo sailor has been rescued in rough seas off the southern coast of Western Australia.

Canadian Paul Lim, 62, set off an emergency beacon on Monday after the engine on his yacht Kekuli came away from its mounting in massive seas.

A Panamanian cargo ship reached him late on Monday night, about 140 nautical miles off the coast.

It took six hours to winch him onboard in 10 metre swells and 50 knot winds.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority says the ship is continuing its journey to the Canary Islands.

It says the 9.5 metre yacht was breaking up and is likely to sink.
