The latest film in the Harry Potter series has shattered box office records in the United States and Canada, raking in $US168 million on its opening weekend.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the eighth and final film in the series based on the books by British author JK Rowling.
The BBC reports the film's distributor, Warner Bros, says it made $US92 million on its opening .
The previous opening weekend record was held by Batman film The Dark Knight, which took $US158 million.
