Senior executive at News Corp quits

A senior executive at News Corporation has quit over the UK hacking scandal.

The resignation of Dow Jones chief executive Les Hinton was announced by the Wall Street Journal newspaper on Friday.

Mr Hinton, 67, is the most senior executive to leave News Corp, which has been engulfed by a phone-hacking scandal in Britain. He worked for the company for more than five decades.

The BBC reports he was head of News International from 1995-2007, a period in which the News of the World was hacking phones.

''That I was ignorant of what apparently happened is irrelevant,'' he said in a statement.

News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks, 43, also quit on Friday in London. She had been with News International for 22 years.

The News of the World closed last weekend as a result of the scandal.
