Qantas to remain international carrier

The head of Qantas says the Australian airline will continue to fly international routes despite losing money on its overseas operations.

Last month, chief executive Alan Joyce said the carrier's international arm will lose nearly $226 million this year and even more in 2012.

In an interview with the ABC this weekend, he said Qantas would remain an international and domestic airline and that the company wanted to significantly grow its international operations.

He said that a decade ago, there was talk that Qantas would not be able to continue as a domestic airline.

"They were saying with the advent of the new low-cost carriers coming into the Australian domestic market that Qantas domestically was a dinosaur. We didn't listen to those people back then," he said.
