Britain's Rory McIlroy captured his first major golfing title with a runaway victory at the US Open on Sunday, banishing memories of his final-round Masters meltdown two months ago.
The 22-year-old Northern Irishman led the field at the year's second major after every round.
He held an eight-shot lead after 54 holes before carding a two-under-par 69 in the final round to finish on 16 under and triumph by eight strokes over Australian Jason Day.
McIlroy vowed he would come back stronger after a painful collapse on the final day of the US Masters in April.
He had entered the final day with a four stroke lead but twice hit a tree, double bogied and had disastrous putting to let the Masters title slip from his grasp.
