Tiananmen Square anniversary marked in Hong Kong

12:15 pm on 5 June 2011

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Hong Kong on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the crushing of China's democracy movement in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, in 1989.

Organisers say 150,000 people attended the rally in a central park, some of them visitors from the Chinese mainland, where such gatherings are banned.

Police estimated the crowd at 77,000.

Tanks and soldiers were sent to clear Tiananmen Square on the night of 3 - 4 June, 1989, after six weeks of protests.

Public discussion of the killings remains taboo in China.
