Actor James Arness, who personified the tall, rugged westerner as the star of Gunsmoke, one of the longest-running series on American television, has died.
Arness, 88, was best known for his 20 years playing Matt Dillon, a US marshal in Dodge City, Kansas.
His younger brother, Peter Graves, died in March last year.
Gunsmoke originated on CBS radio in 1952 with William Conrad as the voice of Marshall Dillon. The TV programme ended in 1975.
It was the top-rated show on television in the United States from 1957 - 1961.
Arness was recommended for the role by John Wayne. He earned three Emmy nominations for the programme over the years.
Other members of the cast were Milburn Stone, Dennis Weaver and Amanda Blake.
Arness appeared in numerous films, including The Farmer's Daughter with Loretta Young in 1947.
