The inaugural Indianapolis 500 was raced on 30 May, 1911 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana, which was built in 1909 as an automobile testing ground. The track was paved with bricks in 1910.
The 500 mile race is held annually on Memorial Day weekend (the last weekend in May).
It was not run from 1917-18 because of World War I and 1942-45 because of World War II.
