The geiger counter is the hot, new must-have item in Japan.

After the operator of the Fukushima nuclear plant this week confirmed meltdowns at three of its reactors after the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March, geiger counters sold out in most electronic shops.

Manufacturers of the gadgets are working around the clock to produce four to five times more than previously.

Production is now almost 5000 per month, but the ABC reports it's not enough to keep up with demand.
