Alassane Ouattara has been formally inaugurated as president of Ivory Coast after six months of unrest.

Fighting broke out when his Laurent Gbagbo, refused to admit defeat following a presidential election in November last year.

Mr Ouattara took the oath of office two weeks ago. He has promised to promote reconciliation.

The guest list included President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, the former colonial power, several African heads of state and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr Ouattara thanked the international community for its support and said the will of the people had triumphed.

Mr Gbagbo was arrested last month in the presidential compound. He and the former first lady are under house arrest awaiting trial, as are many of his ministers and advisers.

Hundreds of civilians died in the fighting after both men declared themselves the winner of the poll.
