Video released of Osama bin Laden

The United States has released five video clips of Osama bin Laden taken from the compound in Pakistan where he was killed by US special forces.

One tape, apparently recorded in October 2010, shows the al-Qaeda leader speaking directly to the camera.

There is no audio on the tape but US officials say it was a message addressed to the United States.

Other clips appeared to be rehearsals for the message.

Reports say further footage showed Osama bin Laden either reviewing his video images or watching a television item about himself.

The senior US intelligence official who released the clips said the compound was an active command and control centre where the al-Qaeda leader remained in strategic and operational control of the organization.

"He was far from a figurehead. He was an active player, making the recent operation even more essential for our nation's security," the official said.

The official told reporters that information recovered from the raid on the compound represented the largest trove of intelligence ever obtained from a single terrorism suspect.

The BBC says the release of the video clips is part of an ongoing effort by the US administration to convince doubters that Osama bin Laden was killed in the raid on 2 May.

Al-Qaeda acknowledged on Friday the death of its leader.

The US official said American intelligence assumed that the organisation's second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was likely to assume control but that he was disliked by some members.
