Movies tie for top place at US box office

Two films shared the top spot at the box office in North America during the US Independence Day holiday weekend.

Both Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'' and [Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs sold about $US42.5 million worth of tickets.

Public Enemies, a Depression-era gangster saga starring Johnny Depp, was third.

Ice Age has also earned $US148 million in 101 foreign markets.

Including its North American tally of $US67.5 million since last Wednesday, its global takings stand at $US215.5 million.

Transformers has now taken $US591 million, to become the biggest film of the year.

The summer movie season is now 5% ahead of last year in terms of ticket sales. Takings amount to $US2.3 billion to date.
