Suspected bomber targets Indonesian mosque

8:00 am on 16 April 2011

A suicide bomber has blown himself up in a mosque inside a police compound in West Java, wounding several officers.

It is the most serious incident in a recent spate of attacks by Islamist militants on government targets in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country.

The bomb exploded at a mosque inside the compound at Cirebon as worshippers were gathering for their Friday prayers.

Among the injured were police officers and local government officials.

Muslim extremists began targeting police several years ago, but no one has claimed responsibility for this attack.

Members of Indonesia's anti-terrorist unit were at the scene, trying to identify the bomber and what group was behind the attack.
