UN climate roadmap agreed at meeting

11:50 am on 9 April 2011

Rich and poor nations have overcome deep divisions to agree on a roadmap for United Nations climate negotiations in 2011.

The meeting in Bangkok started on Tuesday. It was the first since last year's summit in the Mexican city of Cancun, which established a 'Green Climate Fund' with a target of $US100 billion annually.

Poor countries this week demanded a greater focus on long-term actions that they said rich countries must take under an updated Kyoto Protocol.

The first round of commitments are due to expire at the end of 2012.

The talks in Bangkok will be followed by others in Germany, before another UN summit in Durban, South Africa.

The first climate conference was in Copenhagen in December 2009, when the process almost collapsed.

Oxfam New Zealand says the latest talks were frustrating and progress needs to be made at the next meeting in Durban.
