Indian party offers gift to voters in state elections

The governing party in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu says it will provide all households in the state with a free food mixer if it's voted back into power.

The DMK party, a key ally of the Congress-led government, is also offering free laptops for college students and free rice for nearly 2 million poor families.

At the last election, the DMK offered and provided colour televisions for voters.

The party's image has been dented following the arrest of the former telecommunications minister and DMK member Andimuthu Raj in a corruption scandal.
