The last United States World War I veteran, Frank Buckles, has died at his home in West Virginia, aged 110.

Mr Buckles lied about his age to join the army in 1917 at the age of 16, and began service as a driver in Britain, rising to the rank of corporal.

He was sent to France but never made it to the front lines.

During World War 11 he was captured in the Philippines capital Manila, where he had been working for a shipping company; he then spent three years in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.

Mr Buckles was awarded France's Legion of Honour medal in 1999.
